Overview
Since 2019, SpellMentors, in partnership with the Montgomery Recreation Department, has been offering a dynamic 8-week fall training program specifically designed for students at Montgomery Township’s Lower and Upper Middle Schools. This program goes beyond word memorization by immersing students in the rich world of language, fostering a deep understanding of spelling, etymology, and word origins.
Skill Development
Participants in this program not only prepare for spelling bees but also develop essential critical thinking and linguistic skills. Through engaging, hands-on activities like word games, root word analysis, and creative spelling exercises, students learn to break down words by exploring their origins and meanings. This approach allows them to grasp the ‘why’ behind words, turning spelling into an enjoyable and logical process rather than simple memorization.
Comprehensive Language Mastery
Whether students are new to spelling or have their sights set on competing at advanced levels, this program equips them with the tools to succeed both in the spelling bee world and in broader language comprehension. By the end of the 8-week course, participants will not only have honed their spelling skills but will also have developed a solid understanding of the structure and beauty of language—skills that will serve them well in all areas of their academic and personal growth.
Interactive and Collaborative Learning
Each weekly session is designed to be interactive, providing a supportive space where students can build their confidence. Collaboration is also a key component, as students work together to tackle challenging words and concepts, fostering teamwork and a sense of community.
